INFLATABLE CANOE – Some Basic Pointers

I thought I’d put together some pointers for those that are thinking of taking a trip with their new (hey, I hope you’ve got one by now!) inflatable canoe.

A canoe trip requires equipment that is trustworthy but also lightweight and simply portable. Traveling becomes quicker and more efficient, whilst portages turn out to be simpler and more enjoyable.

Do not forget to pack a third oar. A third oar or paddle gives you a spare for crisis situations and is handy should you use paddles of various lengths for smooth water and for rapids depending on the conditions. The longer should be used to slam the stern of the canoe sideways in a rapid which should help you a great deal.

Attach a 20-foot, 3/8 inch in diameter rope to each side of your canoe. These lines are useful for tying up, lining past rapids, hauling up steep banks, and if worse comes to worse, they’re a excellent assist in rescuing a stuck canoe.

Waterproof Packs. All kinds of waterproof packs are obtainable but some advertised as waterproof are only water repellent.

Make sure you test them in advance. All equipment ought to be tied into the canoe so it will not slide around or be lost inside a spill.

Always pack an Emergency Kit/Medical Pack. Your small packet of emergency items should include a first aid kit and a roll of duct tape. The tape is indispensable for patching holes in canoes, and other items. As we all know, nothing spoils a canoeing trip like a hole in the inflatable canoe! A small sewing kit, complete with thread, needles, pins, buttons, additional cloth, and folding scissors is very handy on a long trip. Also take along a blade, a small tube of water-resistant glue, additional cord, water-resistant matches, and a compass.

And, as always, remember to do this stuff to be safe – then have a lot of fun on the water!
