My Inflatable Canoe Experiences
I’ll start by saying a little about my kayaking experiences which I’ve come to enjoy as an alternative to taking my inflatable canoe out on the water.
I’ve got no idea why sea kayak gatherings are called symposiums. It seems such a boring word for such a great idea – a week long jamboree attracting paddlers of all abilities, where you can get some tuition, go on mini expeditions and try out boats or inflatable canoe before buying your own.
Inflatable Canoe Symposium
My first attempt at kayaking was the biannual symposium in Jersey – we did a few short trips, then a 12 mile crossing to Sark, which was a little daunting as we headed out into the open sea. I distinctly remember camping out on the island. It was sun kissed and beautiful.
Before thinking of heading out yourself though, you should get some basics. There are sea kayaking centres all over the place. And most offer weekend starter courses. One the I think is worth mentioning for UK based readers is Adventure Elements, on Anglesey, which caters really well for newbies.
Anglesey has a beautiful, gnarly coast with cliffs and caves, wondrous bird life, and plenty of sheltered water.
Once you’ve caught the sea kayaking bug, plan a holiday around a symposium overseas. One of my favourites is in the Aeolian Islands, off Sicily. It’s very welcoming to inexperienced kayakers, with fantastic water and spectacular volcanic scenery. The pace is very Mediterranean and the food is amazing! Sea kayaking – a great alternative to taking a trip out in your inflatable canoe.
